Five more people, who were taken into custody in Izmir due to ‘insulting the President’, were arrested. Thus, the number of those arrested due to insulting the President within the last week reached 12.
Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office started an investigation against some of the citizens who participated in the rally of Republican People’s Party (CHP) Presidential candidate Muharrem İnce following the publicity of visuals depicting them allegedly “chanting slogans involving insults against President Erdoağn while consuming alcohol at an entertainment center.” Seven of the 15 people with warrants against them within the investigation were arrested due to ‘insulting government authorities’; with two later released with judicial control and one released by the Prosecutor’s Office. Five people, who were later taken into custody, were arrested by the Criminal Judicature of Peace on Duty with the charge of ‘insulting the President.’
On the other hand, five people were taken into custody in the investigation started by Antalya Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office against the slogans chanted by a group gathering in front of Antalya Courthouse in the evening of June 24th, the day of Presidential elections. The people are charged with ‘insulting the President,’ ‘incitement towards resentment and hostility or denigration’ and ‘denigrating the Turkish nation, the government of the Republic of Turkey as well as the institutions of state.’
